We recognise that no matter how small a business is, there are always positive steps to take in making an environmental impact.
Here at the Rhubarb Kitchen, you will note (if you live locally) that when we are not working, or meeting with clients, our lights and heating are switched off. We also set our thermostat at a much lower setting. We are doing our bit to help keep our energy consumption to a minimum.
There is no doubt that financial pressures on people and businesses put climate action at risk. In order to do our bit, we try, where possible, to source our food locally, not only to help keep the carbon footprint as low as possible, but to support our local business community. We all rely on each other in the current climate, and this has never been as important as it is now.
We also offer recyclable disposable products, such as bamboo as an alternative to plastics, along with really thinking about the packaging we use on a day to day basis.
Over the last couple of years, the pandemic and Brexit have battered small businesses from all sides with staff shortages, new regulations, changing consumer behaviours and supply chain issues. Instead of emerging from a chaotic time into one of relative stability, we now need to face the need to pay increased wages (and in doing so keep our team in financial health), spiralling energy bills and rising cost of ingredients.
